@ BV and Yohami, Yes that makes a lot of sense, this men become men through some sort of trial by fire or initiation experience, versus women who become so based on biology (which is not that fun either and lasts about 40 years, btw, but I digress). We certainly are lacking that “coming of age” male ritual in the US. Likely especially so for boys raised in a single mom household w/o a male role model to lead them to manhood. Unless they take the route my brother did, which was to join the armed forces. Maybe there are some such rituals in some cases, for some perhaps it’s hunting, landing their first 5 point buck. For others sports may provide that path? I am trying to think of some other “becoming a man” avenues. I suppose getting laid maybe has become a substitute but it doesn’t really make one “a man.” As far as a ritual, like a ceremony or vision quest or some such like in tribal cultures, not really. Maybe it’s time to bring such things back?

@ scfton, this is a personal question so don’t answer if you don’t want, but were your parents together when you were growing up?
@ BV I am very sorry to hear you experienced that :(
