The woman theoretically gains the Alpha’s contribution to her progeny by having (notionally unprotected, vigorous) sex with him during her most fertile periods. His continued post-sex presence in her life may not be necessary; indeed, it could be a liability. The woman gains the Beta’s contribution to her children by having him commit to her and by establishing exclusive access to his resources and social network.
Note that in a prehistoric environment the physical qualities of the ideal sperm donor would have been highly correlated with the abilities to provide and protect. So a “package deal” would have been more common. You will still see this in environments in which, say, provisioning ability is fairly undifferentiated (high school would be the obvious example). But later in life there may be stark trade-offs to be navigated.
The typical male obsession with Alpha traits—apparently very confusing to women— is due to the obvious ability of an Alpha as described to serial-cuckold other males, run harems (which then increase sexual competition among excluded males), and to obtain sex with limited resource outlay (which is psychologically nourishing because it provides almost pure-play validation).
The most successful womanizers in my humble experience are those who have several, demonstrable Alpha traits and who simultaneously and selectively dangle choice Beta ones as a kind of trophy to be won by the highest-quality female participant.
